Bright Ideas for Your Homes ExteriorPosted March 29, 2017 by Sue Prichard
We all know that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but what about houses? Rightly or wrongly, many of us still judge properties by the way they look on the outside. This is often unfair because a lot of homeowners spend much more time and money on interior design than they do on the exterior, but people will be people and we all judge.
What this means for homeowners is that, if they decide to put their property on the market, they need to do a little exterior design, along with other home improvements, to give their home kerb appeal and ensure that potential new owners aren’t put off before stepping foot through the door.
Here are four simple things you can do to give your home more kerb appeal whether you plan to sell or you just want your home to look great:
A Lick of Paint
When it comes to exterior design, a can of paint can solve 80 percent of your problems. Simply by giving your home and your doors a new coat of paint, you can refresh its look and make it instantly look less run down. Ideally, you should paint your house white, cream or another neutral shade for the best results, but you can go a bit crazier with the doors if you wish. Pink and lavender are popular door colours right now, but black, red and white are timeless.
Once you’ve painted the exterior, make sure that you give it another coat periodically to prevent it lapsing back into its previous state.
Splurge on Knockers
Spending a little extra on door knockers, letterboxes and locks will give your home a more sophisticated appeal, but you need to keep your door furniture in line with the look of your home in general. For example, putting a Victorian letterbox on a new-build would just look silly and pretentious, but it would look wonderful on the right period house. Keep it stylish, sophisticated and simple for the best first impression.
Gutters and Pipes
If your gutters are full and overflowing and your outdoor pipework is dirty and grimy, it can lower the tone of your whole house and give the impression that you are a slovenly homeowner. This can easily be fixed with new PVC plumbing supplies to replace the old piping and a good sweep of the gutters. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you should always call a professional in when the time comes to replace your pipes.
If you want to impress from the outside, you absolutely need to sort out your garden. Even if your lawn is cut, your fence freshly painted and your gate free from rust, if your garden looks plain and boring, it could be a turn-off. So, plant some flowers, hang some baskets and invest in some pretty plants that will blow anyone who sees your garden away. If you have paths and paving, give them the once over with a power washer, so that they look fresh and clean and sweep your steps weekly.
Do these four things, and your garden will draw them in instead of sending them running!
